The Story Behind ARUN, Your Neighborhood Massage Studio in Noe Valley

I’ve lived in San Francisco for more than twelve years, and I’ve come to love how much life fits into a single day here. We work, we climb hills, we squeeze in a run or a class, and we take care of the people we love. Often it’s only when we finally sit down at night that we notice how much we’ve been carrying: in our shoulders, in our backs, in the way we breathe.
That’s why I wanted to open a neighborhood massage studio in Noe Valley. A place close to home that you can come to after a long week at your desk, a run that left you sore, or a day spent looking after everyone else. A place where, for an hour or two, someone looks after you.
Every massage begins with listening
When you come to ARUN, the first thing we do is listen. Where have you been feeling tension? How would you like to feel when you leave?
One guest might want to spend most of the session on a shoulder that’s been nagging all week. Another might want gentle pressure and a quiet hour to slow down. Sometimes it’s the same person on different days, and that’s exactly how it should be.
Our approach blends Thai massage traditions with Western therapeutic techniques. Knowing how muscles work together and how the body moves helps us decide where to spend more time, how much pressure feels right, and when a gentle stretch will help. We check in throughout your session, because what you feel guides what we do next. Even if you book the same massage every time, we start fresh by asking what you need today.
The moments that stay with me
One of my favorite moments comes at the end of a session, when a guest sits up, rolls their shoulders, and says, “That feels easier.”
Maybe that tightness has been there all week. Maybe it’s been there so long they’d almost forgotten what it felt like to move without thinking about it. Either way, those words stay with me. I feel lucky to do work where something as simple as turning your head comfortably, or walking without noticing your back, can mean so much.
A massage takes up only a small part of your day, but I hope its effect lasts much longer. Our name, ARUN, means “dawn” in Thai. That’s the feeling I hope you leave with: as if you’ve woken up to a fresh new morning, lighter and renewed. I hope you carry that out the door, with a little more ease and a little more energy for what comes next: the walk home, dinner with your family, or simply an evening when you finally feel ready to rest.
Thank you for making room for us
To everyone who has booked a massage, come back to see us, or told a neighbor about ARUN, thank you. Every visit and every recommendation helps a small, independent business thrive here in Noe Valley. I’m grateful you’ve made room for us in your lives.
As we grow, my promise is simple: we’ll keep listening to every person who walks through our door, and keep getting better at taking care of you. That’s how I hope ARUN will grow alongside this neighborhood for many years to come, like the dawn, quietly showing up every day.
If you’ve been meaning to make a little time for yourself, we’d love to welcome you in.
